Summer Art Class Craziness!

I have a ton of new pictures and projects to post  but I have been so busy doing my summer classes I just can't seem to get around to it. Every summer I create a whole bunch of 1 1/2 hr. classes for ages  4-5, 5-8, 9-13, and 11-15 year olds that I do at my home studio. Here is a the first part of the summer schedule:

Tuesday June 14

10-11:30 Ages 5-8 Funky Cats-we will create some stylized cats in this class based on artist Rosina Wachtmeister’s work.
1-2:30 Ages 9-13 Cats in Art-we will do two cat projects in this class based on Rosina Wachtmeister and Laura Burch’s work. (pastel and watercolor)

Wednesday June 15

9:30-11:30 Ages 12-15-(Girls Only)-Heart Art-we will create a mixed media piece using paper, nu pastels, paint, and wood.
1-2:30 Ages 9-13 Watercolor Landscape Montana style!

Thursday June 16

10-11:30 Ages 5-8-Pizza Art- (back by popular demand!) We will use plaster and paint to create a wood pizza.
1-2:30 Ages 9-13 Fantasy Animals-Drawing and creativity will be the focus of this class

Tuesday June 28

10-11:30 Ages 5-8 Pretty as a Peacock-lots of design work and color make up this project
1-2:30 Ages 9-13-Hawaii Art-poster style art using acrylics

Wednesday June 29

1-3p.m. Ages 9-13 Desert Dreams-we will paint a wooden snake (Oaxacan style), and do a chalk pastel cactus scene.

Thursday June 30

10-11:30-Ages 4-5 Preschool Art-we’ll explore some different mediums in this class.
1-2:30 Ages 9-13 Egyptian Tomb Painting-Draw, paint and write like the ancient Egyptians in this project.

July 2011

Tuesday July 5
11:30-1p.m. Ages 5-8 Gumball Machine-don’t you just love the sound of that? The artist Wayne Thiebaud is our inspiration for this mixed media class.
2-3:30 Ages 9-13 Hundertwasser Mixed Media-we’ll learn about the artist Hundertwasser and use paper and paint on wood to create this project.

Wednesday July 6

1-2:30 Ages 9-13 A Sunny day on the Lake- (repeat of Christmas break class)-Thickly applied acrylic on wood with pastel highlights make this a fun project.

Thursday July 7

10-11:30 Ages 5-8 Monster Stories-fun with monsters. Urgh!
1-2:30 Ages 9-13 Monster Stories-more fun with monsters and paint.
Tuesday July 12 10-11:30- Ages 5-8 Wood Guitar (back by popular demand)
Wednesday July 13 Tea Party Art-Ages 9-13 1-2:30 Still life painted with tea.

9:30-11:00 Ages 11-15 Design with Matisse-we’ll combine both of Matisse’s styles in this one project. 
12:30-2:00 Ages 5-8 Paint chip Art-we’ll transform a crocodile with paint chips and pastels.
3-4:30 Ages 9-13 More paint chip art-we’ll do a flamingo and crocodile in this class.

Wednesday July 20

10:00-11:30 Ages 9-13 Chalk Pastel flowers-we’ll use recycled paper and two different types of pastels for these beautiful flowers.
1-2:30 Ages 5-8 Gumball Machine-don’t you just love the sound of that? The artist Wayne Thiebaud is our inspiration for this mixed media class. (same as July 5th class)

Tuesday July 26

9:30-11 Ages 5-8-Jigsaw art-we will trade “pieces” of our art with other students in the class to create a fun abstract picture.
12:30-2 Ages 9-13 Jigsaw art-same as above with a more advanced drawing and painting project
3:00-4:30 Ages 7-10 Dog Doodles-we’ll try our hand at some funny dog drawings in this class.

Wednesday July 27

9:30-11:30 Ages 11-15 Pop Art Pup-fun dog art-draw and paint and embellish to create this Pop Art piece.
1-2:30 Ages 8-13-Another crazy project based on the artist Hundertwasser’s unique style. We will create our own stylized wooden structure and decorate it with paint and paper.

Tuesday August 9

9:30-11:00 Ages 8-13 Mixed Media Wood Butterfly. We’ll create some beautiful butterflies in this class in the style of artist Laurel Burch.
12:30-2:00 Ages 12-15 Floral Fantasy-Wild and whimsical-acrylics and pastel on canvas.
3:00-4:30 Ages 5-8 Sweet Shoppe-we’ll use chalk pastel for these large pictures of yummy treats.

Wednesday August 10

10:00-11:30 Ages 5-8 Face it!  Think Picasso for this funky face sculpture you are going to love!
1:00-2:30-Ages 9-13 Face it! A more advanced take on the above project.
Tuesday August 16
9:30-11:00. Ages 9-13 Whimsical folk art landscape on wood-lots of acrylic painting in this class.
12:30-2:00 Ages 5-9 Cartoon Faces-all kinds of fun with some simple techniques.
3:00-4:30 Ages 9-13 Watercolor cityscape-fun with perspective and design.

I hope to share some of these at the end of the summer! I'm looking forward to spending some time seeing what everyone else is up to this summer in the art teaching world-thanks for all the inspiration!

Mosaic Aztec Mask Project

This is another project I did with one of my 5th and 6th grade classes this year.  I tied it in with their study of the Aztec and Mayan cultures and the early explorers This took two 2 hour class periods.

I had created a mask template (with eyes cut out) that each student traced around onto their board, then they attached a piece of cardboard we cut for a nose shape using tape. The inside of the mask was base coated black (except for the eyes and mouth), and the outside of the mask was base coated white. While that was drying, I had the students paint 1/4 sheets of watercolor paper with a med., dark, and light turquoise color streaking it on the paper instead of blending it in ( to make it look like real turquoise). When the paint was dry they cut these into small tile pieces. After the mask board was dry they added a border with a ruler and painted that in yellow, and the background orange. Next step was adding the mosaic pieces with some mod podge, being careful to leave the black showing thru on all sides of each piece. This was a time consuming process, but produced a very real mosaic look when finished. After painting the teeth and eyes in they went over the whole mask with the mod podge.  They each finished the piece with their own border design, and a Sharpie outline between the background and border. I forgot my camera that day and so I don't have any pictures of the student's work. Here is my sample:

Andy Warhol meets George Washington

I came up with this lesson for the 5th and 6th graders I am teaching this year. They are studying the early explorers thru the 1800s. I was going to do a portrait lesson on George Washington and a study on the artist who did his portrait for the dollar bill, but decided the kids would have more  fun with this Andy Warhol inspired lesson. They chose from a profile or full face view of Washington that I had made copies of. They could determine what to add to their picture that would illustrate something about Washington, his life, or time in history. To create a Warhol style painting they had to choose a set group of colors and then use them in each of the four sections but in a different way. We used carbon paper and tracing paper to duplicate their pictures. This took alot of time and care but the kids rose to the challenge and the end results were great.

After picking the profile or full view of Washington they traced him onto tracing paper and then added dates,guns,cherries or something else to their piece. They divided their watercolor paper into four sections and using a stylis and carbon paper traced their design into each of the four sections. They then outlined everything in Sharpie and filled in the pictures with watercolor. Coming up with different combinations with  the same color palette was a challenge. (but one they enjoyed). Hundertwasser Art Project

I was inspired by the banner on the art blog Paintedpaper (great lessons, check this blog out) for this Hundertwasser lesson. I love projects with lots of color and mixed media. I have done this three different ways in the last two weeks. The samples from this 5-6th grade class that are shown below are done on heavy cardboard, with acrylic paint, and the cut paper houses are decoupaged on. I have also done it on black poster board, with acrylic paint and just gluing the houses on, not using the mod podge. And with my preschoolers, we used chalk pastel on black poster board, and also just glued the houses on.

Hundertwasser is a fun artist to introduce to kids-they really relate to his colorful style and playful ideas. He designed houses, did paintings, created postage stamps and banners, and shared his concern for the environment thru posters. Next week  I am going to have my 7th-12th grade students do a poster in his style conveying a message that is important to them.

After sharing the book  Harvesting Dreams-Hundertwasser for Kids with the students I had them draw in some simple hill shapes at the bottom of their cardboard piece. They painted the hills in green and the background in black. Then using a round brush they painted in tall flower stalks and some leaves. Using a small flat brush they topped each stem with a circle in the color of their choice. I showed them how to use the round brush to make beautiful petals for each flower, mixing and matching colors. (We added white to all the colors to make them more opaque on the black background). We then did a black spiral in the center of each flower, and white wavy lines in the background using the round brush. (Hundertwasser liked to use lines and spirals in his art).

While the paint was drying the kids picked out three different house shapes,roof shapes, and doors and windows. (I precut out a variety of different paper to save on time). When the paint was dry they decoupaged the houses on and then covered their whole painting in the mod podge to finish it off. I love how colorful and unique they all turned out.

Pink Elephants and Blue Horses-Franz Marc for Preschoolers

During the month of March my preschool class did two lessons based on the artist Franz Marc. The vivid use of color to express emotions and ideas is a trademark of this German born artist. He is most famous for his paintings of unusually colored animals set in almost abstract style scenery. Here is an example of some of his work:

For the first project I found a Franz Marc horse on the internet as a coloring sheet which I traced onto  a scrap ofposter board. They outlined them in sharpie and used chalk pastel to fill in the color. After spraying them with fixative I cut them out. The kids then painted a colorful "warm colors" background with acrylic paints, using a sponge to add texture. When the background was dry they used the glue stick to place their horse in the scene. The second project was a great drawing project. I taught the kids how to draw a step by step simple elephant starting with a circle.(This is a simple way to draw an elephant-see How to Draw an Elephant We practiced this two times on a practice sheet. Then we did the final drawing on a sheet of watercolor paper. We outlined the elephant in Sharpie. Then we used watercolors to fill in the pink and create a setting. I think both projects turned out amazingly well considering these are 3-5 yr.olds.

Charles Demuth Cool Colors Number Five Art Project

I've been buried in art classes and prep work and haven't had time to sit and blog a lesson lately. This is one I did two weeks ago at one of the schools I work at. I have been captivated by this print by Charles Demuth for a long time, because I love  the use of numbers and text in art. There are many lessons you could do based on this print-I came up with this one because I had just finished another project using black paper and cool colors and it turned out great. (It was a portrait of Medusa), so I thought why not the number 5?

I did this project with grades K-5. For the Kinders I drew the number 5 on the poster board before class using the white pencil. The kids used a plastic cup to trace on 5 circles anywhere they wanted, and a ruler to draw 5 lines. For the older kids I let them do their own number 5.  Prior to the start of class I had mixed up some blues and greens with white (to make them more opaque and bright on the black background). The kids used these colors to fill in all the spaces they had made on their posters, being careful not to put the same color next to itself. This was not as easy as it sounds. They were challenged as they got farther along in their painting. For the Kinders I used some black paint to outline to re-discover their shapes and their number 5. The older kids were able to paint neater and keep their sections defined. Below are some of the first and second grade pictures:
